[Misc] Thoughts on MobileIron

Here are unsorted thoughts about the experience I collected on MobileIron that you might know about before trying the product

  • The iPhone support is quite good, if IOS is your target of choice, MobileIron is definetly a MDM platform to try.
    • Good provisionning support for VPN, Certificates, mail accounts, Wifi settings
    • Requires an Apple Enterprise license
    • Good public/company app store support
  • Android support is somehow messy :
    • No support of the native android mail app, (Android limitation)
    • Tightly integrated with "Touchdown" an App from Nitrodesk, which is not as good as expected and costs more or less $20 by device,
    • No good VPN support yet, (Android limitation)
  • Admin platform is quite usable with little training
  • Integration with Lotus Notes Traveler instead of MS Exchange is working
  • Jailbreak detection is reliable so far

We also faced a few issues:

  • Out of sync devices might not be able to sync again
  • Bad wrong password support (Esp. on password changes + android)
  • Changing ActiveSync settings might lead to HUGE battery + data usage

  1. “No support of the native android mail app, (Android limitation)”

This is not an Android limitation. Nothing prevents MobileIron from allowing Android devices to get to the traveler server (it could simply tunnel the HTTP(S) connections through) but MI have chosen not to follow that route.

    • Hi Tim,

I guess you are a MobileIron engineer, and that you won’t come back to check my replies.
Regarding this particular point I’m really looking for a clear feedback from MobileIron that I didn’t get before.

Our reseller sold android support this way :
      * We cannot configure android native mail app because android API do not support it
      * We offer you a better alternative, for free ( Namely, touchdown for MobileIron )

But things have not been that nice in the real world. We are using lotus Traveler and facing the following limitations :
      * NO free email client supporting activesync ( Even less supported by mobileIron )
      * TouchDown had huge limitations in Traveler support ( No meeting invite support, no embedded images, messy HTML support …)
      * Free Touchdown version was removed from the market.

Now, what would you advise for supporting our Android users to have a nice MobileIron Experience ?
